| Round Table in Dominican Republic

The workshop on Management of Intellectual Property Assets in Small-and-Medium-Sized Companies in the Agro Industrial Sector and Handcrafts was organized, with the participation of ASIPI, by WIPO in the Dominican Republic on August 26th and 27th, 2007. Its main objective was to promote the use of distinctive signs in the entrepreneurial agricultural and handcraft sectors as a means of differentiation to achieve greater competitiveness both in the national and the international markets. Seventeen national and foreign lecturers took part in the event, among whom we wish to mention Mr. Marco Marzano and Ms. Betty Berendson, WIPO, Mr. Enrique Ramírez, Director of the Industrial Property National Office of the Dominican Republic, Mr. Justin Young and Ms. María del Pilar Troncoso, representatives of ASIPI, Mr. Alberto Monjarás and Ms. Patricia Gamboa, of the Mexican IMPI and the Peruvian INDECOPI, respectively, Ms. Ana Muñoz, of Handcrafts of Colombia, and representatives of the national business sector. The workshop met with great success due to the interest shown in the issues that were dealt with, namely, the advantages of adequately protecting industrial property assets. In addition, it was a starting point for handcraft representatives agro industrial representatives to organize themselves to defend each sector’s specific interests, of which the existing problems were raised.

| Event in Cuba

From September 17th to 20th, 2007, many specialized firms in Intellectual Property in Cuba hosted the event entitled LAW MULTILATERAL APPROACH in the city of La Habana. It aimed to promote and exchange common issues among IP professionals so as to foster the relationship between law firms around the world.
The Secretary of ASIPI, Juan Vanrell, travelled to La Habana to represent the association at such prestigious event.
The academic programme included many topics and with reference to Industrial Property the issues discussed were, among others, the Protection to New Technologies, the Madrid System and the Legal Framework of the Internet.

| Round Table in Montevideo

On Thursday September 6th, 2007, a Round Table was held in Montevideo, Uruguay. It was entitled "Round Table with the National Agency of Industrial Property: current and future situation of the Agency - Perspective on New International Treaties and Agreements". The event was organized by ASIPI, INTA and AUDAPI (the Uruguayan Association of Industrial Property Agents).

June 12th, 2007 - The Executive Committee of ASIPI, represented by its President Martín Michaus, Vice President Fernando Triana, Secretary Juan Vanrell, Treasurer Rafael Covarrubias, President of the International Committee José Barreda and Mr. Marino Porzio, visited the headquarters of WIPO in Geneva and met its authorities. The Director General of WIPO Mr Kamil Idris and Francis Gurry, Michael Keplinger, Ernesto Rubio, Carlotta Graffigna, Sherif Saadallah, Alejandro Roca and Michele Weil-Guthmann participated in the meetings.

| Tribute to José Carlos Tinoco Soares

During the event entitled LAW MULTILATERAL EVENT (La Habana, Cuba, from September 17th to 20th, 2007) a tribute to Mr. José Carlos Tinoco Soares was held at the Magna Aula of the University of La Habana, honoring his long and fruitful career. Mr. Tinoco Soares is a brilliant attorney and an active writer of many and valuable publications. He has belonged to the Executive Committee of ASIPI twice: once as a Secretary from 1981 to 1984 and now as the First Vice President (006 - 2009).
